A holistic approach to pain relief recognizes that the mind, body, and lifestyle are interconnected and must be treated as a whole. Unlike conventional treatments, which often focus solely on symptom management, holistic methods seek to restore balance and health across all aspects of life. This approach encourages women to address not only their physical pain but also the mental, emotional, and lifestyle factors contributing to their discomfort.


Holistic pain relief involves incorporating a range of natural remedies and lifestyle changes to support the body’s inherent ability to heal. These treatments may include physical practices such as yoga, pilates and targeted exercises, mindfulness techniques for stress management, dietary changes, and environmental adjustments such as improving ergonomics in the workplace or home. By integrating these various elements, women can create a comprehensive plan that tackles the root causes of their pain rather than merely alleviating symptoms.

Somatic Approach

Soma comes from a word meaning "body" in Greek, so somatic means "of the body". Using special techniques, a somatic therapist helps you release any trauma that has become “trapped” in your body. For example, somatic experiencing is a therapeutic practice that helps individuals release stored trauma and tension in the body.


In my practice, when we apply a somatic approach, many women with chronic pain find that addressing unresolved emotional issues can have a profound impact on their physical well-being. By becoming more attuned to the sensations in their body and releasing trapped stress, they can achieve long-term pain relief.


As a holistic physical therapist, many times, I do not even need to use a hands-on approach because the pain decreases or disappears after we do somatic techniques.


Mind-Body Techniques

One of the core elements of holistic pain relief is mind-body techniques, which help to release tension, reduce stress, and promote relaxation.


Another effective mind-body approach is mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), which involves cultivating awareness of the present moment without judgment. Mindfulness practices can help women manage their pain by reducing their focus on discomfort and fostering a sense of calm. Through techniques such as meditation, breathing exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation, women can reduce the emotional and psychological impact of their pain, allowing their bodies to heal more effectively.


Visceral Manipulation

Visceral manipulation is a lesser-known but highly effective technique that I use for treating lower back pain.


This gentle manual therapy focuses on the internal organs (viscera) and their surrounding structures. Visceral manipulation addresses the relationship between the viscera and the musculoskeletal system, which can become restricted due to post-surgical scarring, inflammation, or even emotional stress. For example, women who have undergone abdominal surgeries such as cesarean sections, hysterectomies, or other pelvic procedures often experience lower back pain as a result of scar tissue and adhesions that alter the natural mobility of the organs and muscles.


By using precise hands-on techniques, a visceral manipulation can restore normal movement and function to the affected areas, alleviating lower back pain and promoting overall well-being. This form of therapy also works in conjunction with other holistic treatments to address the root causes of pain, offering women an opportunity to heal both physically and emotionally.


Holistic Physical Therapy

Holistic physical therapy goes beyond traditional exercises and focuses on treating the entire body. Unlike conventional physical therapy, which may concentrate solely on the site of pain, holistic physical therapy examines how the entire body works together. The goal is to identify imbalances and dysfunctions throughout the body that may be contributing to the pain.


Holistic physical therapy might incorporate the basics, like manual therapy, joint mobilization, .... but will also add more specific techniques such as postural education, cupping, tapping, muscle re-education, and core strengthening exercises, all of which help to restore proper alignment and movement.


It also addresses environmental factors that may contribute to lower back pain, such as poor ergonomics at work or home. Additionally, holistic physical therapists often educate patients on the importance of maintaining good posture and developing body awareness, helping them to prevent pain recurrence in the future.

  • Engage in regular exercise: Focus on low-impact exercises that strengthen your core muscles, such as walking, yoga, or Pilates. Regular movement will not only improve your posture and strengthen your muscles but also release endorphins that naturally reduce pain.

  • Adopt a balanced diet: Nourish your body with anti-inflammatory foods, such as leafy greens, fatty fish, and nuts, which can help reduce inflammation and support overall health. Avoid processed foods and excessive sugar, which may contribute to chronic inflammation and exacerbate pain.


By combining these holistic practices, you can create a personalized healing plan that addresses the root causes of your pain and promotes overall well-being. Consistency is crucial; implementing these strategies into your daily routine will help you achieve lasting relief from lower back pain.
